Abstract

The increasing amount of analytical data and the cooperation of various scientific disciplines in large scale projects makes it necessary to use an efficient data information system for data storage and exchange. Such an information system must be able to handle all types of data relevant to the geoscientific disciplines and to present the heterogeneous and dynamic data in a simple and unique way. WDC-MARE/PANGAEA® has the experience in data management of international and interdisciplinary projects.PANGAEA® - Publishing Network for Geoscientific and Environmental Data is an information system, operated as an Open Access library for georeferenced data from basic research on earth and environment. Scientific primary data are archived with related metainformation in a relational database, distributed via webservices and accessible through various clients and the search engine PangaeaSearch on the Internet. Data set descriptions include a bibliographic citation and are persistently identified using the Digital Object Identifier (DOI). The PANGAEA data model is running on a relational database (SYBASE). The model consists of four main tables (Project, Campaign, Event, Data) and supporting tables with supplemental information. The hierarchy of the four main tables follows the steps in science for gathering analytical data: within a PROJECT different CAMPAIGNs are executed to get samples for investigations or to make measurements at distinct locations (EVENT). The result of the investigations are analytical data, organized in Data Series, grouped in DATA SETS. Some fields in the tables are interconnected by relations. Mainly the data sets are related to fields of other tables to describe the data. Any information describing the real data are called metadata. The World Data Center for Marine Environmental Sciences (WDC-MARE) is aimed at collecting, scrutinizing, and disseminating data related to Global Change in the fields of environmental oceanography, marine geosciences, and marine biology. It focuses on georeferenced data (numeric, text, and any kind of binary objects) using the PANGAEA information system as its long-term archive and publication unit.Since several years WDC-MARE/PANGAEA® is partner in nearly 140 European and international projects like the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP), Hotspot Ecosystem Research on the Margins of European Seas (HERMES) and the German section of InterRidge (SPP1144).
