The Large-Area Photo-Mosaicking (LAPM) tool was specifically developed for seafloor mapping applications. It is capable of handling datasets of thousands of images, and can rely on robust feature detection and matching algorithms (SIFT) as well as on navigation data from underwater vehicles (ROV, AUV, etc.) for the production of photomosaics. Final photomosaics can be georeferenced for direct import into ArcGIS. The Large-Area Photo-Mosaicking (LAPM) tool is NOT a panorama program. Although it can be run on any image dataset, it cannot achieve the same quality as dedicated programs for the production of panoramas.
