Abstract

This work discusses the spatial representativeness and quality of meteorological data sampled by two different measurement approaches: a continuously monitored meteoro-logical station at the polar research base Neumayer III and a nearby unmanned and more cost-effective automatic weather station (AWS), both located on the Ekström Ice Shelf (An-tarctica). Agreement of the two datasets was statistically tested for summer and winter season, as well as for polar day and polar night. The results show, that the Neumayer III station has a much better data coverage, whe-reas the AWS shows many data gaps, especially during polar night. Correlation analysis of the majority of the meteorological parameters result in very high correlation coefficients (rs > 0.9) differing only in the second decimal value. Notably the air pressure has always the strongest correlation.
